Understanding Zakat / Memahami Zakat

What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is a mandatory charitable contribution calculated at 2.5% of eligible wealth. Zakat purifies wealth and helps redistribute resources to those in need, including the poor, the needy, zakat administrators, new Muslims, those in bondage, those in debt, for the cause of Allah, and wayfarers.

What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth that makes a Muslim liable to pay zakat. It is equivalent to the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. For 2026, the PPZ-MAIWP nisab value is approximately RM33,996 based on current gold prices (~RM400/g). If your total eligible wealth exceeds the nisab for a full lunar year (haul), you are required to pay zakat.

Where to Pay Zakat?

In Malaysia, zakat can be paid through your state zakat collection centre. Each state has its own zakat authority. For example, PPZ-MAIWP handles zakat for the Federal Territories (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Labuan). You can pay online through their respective websites, via salary deduction, bank transfers, or in person at their offices and appointed agents.
